Manufactured in China and imported to the United States beginning in 2001, Chinese drywall is a building product that contains dangerous levels of toxic chemicals, such as carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide and hydrogen sulfide. The drywall, which was installed mostly in Southern homes, may be in as many as 20,000 homes across the country. While the problems associated with Chinese drywall aren't proclaimed as loudly as those associated with asbestos, they are very real. If you live in a home that you suspect might have Chinese drywall, check for these alarming signs and symptoms.

Sights and Smells

One of the most recognizable symptoms of Chinese drywall is the presence of sulfur in the air. If your house has a rotten egg or sulfur smell, you may have this type of drywall in your home. Chinese drywall causes visible signs as well. For example, the chemicals emitted are highly corrosive and often corrode or blacken metal items found within or on the walls. This includes brackets, wiring, pipes and so forth. Since there are other things that can cause sulfur smells within the home, it's vital that you have your air quality checked by a Chinese drywall professional to find the exact cause of your odor.

Medical Issues and Illness

There have not been enough studies to definitively link Chinese drywall with medical conditions. However, people who have had exposure to the building material report similar symptoms. What's more, those symptoms get better when they are outside of the home. Common physical symptoms associated with Chinese drywall exposure include:

  • Runny and irritated nose
  • Nose bleeds
  • Sore throat
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Cough
  • Itchy eyes and skin
  • Sinus infections

As you can see, the chemicals found in Chinese drywall irritate the mucus membranes of the body, resulting in pain and inflammation.

Damage and Overall Weirdness

It may seem like something from a Sci-Fi film, but Chinese drywall can cause appliances to act wonky. It may even cause them to fail completely. Appliances such as microwaves, televisions, computers and refrigerators often go on the fritz when there is Chinese drywall in a home. This is due to the fact that the chemicals from the drywall corrode and compromise pipes and wiring found within the appliances.
